winner of the Ballon d’Or an incredible seven times Lionel Messi was omitted from the list of candidates for the prestigious award a year ago, but he is now back in the running for the honor. This time around, longtime adversary Cristiano Ronaldo is not one of the nominees for the award.

The 30-man list of nominees was expanded on Wednesday to include Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland. Messi was a star for Argentina’s winning team at the World Cup in December and currently plays for Inter Miami.

Ronaldo, a five-time champion who currently competes for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, failed to make the cut for the first time since 2003, making him ineligible for the tournament.

On October 30, it will be announced who the winner is.

The award has been presented annually to men since 1956 and to women since 2018 (when Ada Hegerberg became the first female winner), but both will be stopped in 2020 due to the pandemic. Since 1956, the award has been presented annually to men.

Aitana Bonmati, who was just last week named the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, is one of the six women who have been nominated to represent Spain. Bonmati led Spain to victory in the Women’s World Cup last month, which the Spanish team went on to claim.

Bonmati expressed his gratitude and pride at being nominated alongside other great players in a post on his social media accounts.

Alexia Putellas, a two-time winner, did not make the cut for the women’s list because an ACL injury caused her to miss time from competing.
