Elon Musk Confirms That X Coming Soon With Video And Audio Calling Features

For the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk has many plans that go beyond just social media connectivity. Adding support for video and audio calling is one of these ideas. He has previously discussed this new feature on a number of occasions. Musk has now revealed a few additional details, so it appears that the team is getting closer to its release.

Coming Soon: Video and Audio Calling on X (Twitter)

In a post on X, Elon Musk shared some information regarding X’s video and audio calling capabilities. He began by mentioning that the X video and audio calling feature would be compatible with Android, iOS, Mac, and PC. It’s unclear if all of these platforms will be supported right away or if there will be a gradual rollout.

The announcement’s most intriguing detail is that users of X will no longer require phone numbers in order to make audio and video calls. According to Musk, “X is the effective global address book” for the feature. He made no specific mention of the specifics of how the platform’s “address book” would function.

It is simple to picture the mayhem that would ensue if X permitted anyone to initiate a video or audio call with any other user of the app. We can only hope that X will provide privacy controls that are comparable to those it provides for shared posts. Users can decide whether anyone can respond to their posts, just the people they follow, or just the people specifically mentioned in the post. Users can even create a Circle to share posts with only those particular users.

The video and audio calling function for X was first mentioned to us a month ago. In an interview with CNBC, Linda Yaccarino, the new CEO of X, disclosed it. Andrea Conway, an X designer, also shared screenshots of the calling interface’s proposed design. By tapping the phone icon in the top right corner, users would be able to start audio or video calls from within DMs, she demonstrated.
